Pumpkin Spice Season is Upon Us. But Who Has the Best?

By Emily Lenore

Fall is here. Coffee enthusiasts rejoice that one of their favorite seasonal beverages has returned: the Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s a versatile drink- order it hot if the temperature has dipped below 60 degrees, or iced if it still feels like summer outside.

I visited 6 area coffee shops to see who makes the best PSL. For consistency, I ordered the same drink at every spot: a small hot pumpkin spice latte, with no modifications. In Sterling, I visited Starbucks, Sophie’s Cafe, and Airplay Espresso and Bakery. In Rock Falls, I stopped at Dunkin’, and in Dixon, Books on First and Gingko Tree Cafe.

After trying them all and taking notes, here’s my thoughts.

My least favorites are Gingko Tree, Books on First, and Dunkin’. The lattes from Gingko Tree and Books on First both lacked a distinct pumpkin or espresso flavor. All I could taste was a steamed milk and a general, mild spice flavor. Dunkin’ offered more of a pumpkin taste, and it was just okay. I don’t hate it, but it’s not my favorite, either.

My top three are Starbucks, AirPlay, and Sophie’s. These three lattes are all really solid options for pumpkin spice fans. Sophie’s had a strong pumpkin flavor, while AirPlay leaned toward the espresso side.  I thought Starbucks had the best balance between espresso and pumpkin spice. Sophie’s and Starbucks also get bonus points for presentation, topped with whipped cream and pumpkin spice.

In the end, Starbucks is my winner. Between the balanced flavors and nice presentation, they’ll be where you can find my favorite PSL this season.

Here’s my final rankings:

1.Starbucks

2. Airplay

3. Sophie’s

4. Dunkin’

5 & 6. Books On First & Gingko Tree Cafe
